HERRERA PERFORMS “ONE WOMAN SHOW”

Irma Herrera performed her “One Woman Show” for CTN’s Fall Reception on October 27th on Austin Community College’s Highland Campus. The reception was sponsored by Dr. Ruth Reinhart, ACC Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Support Services.

In Herrera’s solo play, “Why Would I Mispronounce My Name?”  history and comedic insights are woven into stories about names, shedding light and throwing shade on prejudices and assumptions.

Herrera portrayed 20+ characters allowing audiences to experience what it was like for a Mexican-American girl who leaves a segregated South Texas town searching for educational and economic opportunities. An affirmative action student, she ultimately finds her way to the liberal mecca of San Francisco to work as a civil rights lawyer at MALDEF.

Before and after the performance guests mingled and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres. Music was provided by alumnus Francisco Lara Galvez who sang some boleros and played trova music for the event.
