Rosa Gutierrez is originally from Los Nogales, Nuevo Leon, Mexico but came to this country when she was 9 years old. She came to live in Roma, Texas where she graduated high school and lived until she got married and moved to the nearby town of Rio Grande City. .She graduated from Roma High School in the year 2000 as number 7 ranked in a class of 400. This gave her the opportunity to be part of Valley Scholars, a program that provided a fully paid scholarship with South Texas College (STC) in addition to mentorship. She graduated STC in December 2001 with an Associate’s in Education and transferred to University of Texas Pan-American in Spring 2002 as a University Scholar. This program provided a full scholarship tocomplete her bachelor’s degree. She graduated UT-Pan American in Spring of 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Her passion for education started in these schools, where she got the opportunity to work as a math tutor for three years and a grader for one. As she helped these students better understand math concepts, she started to realize that the education field and showing students her passion for the subject would be a good path for her.
She continued in UT-Pan American for two more years and completed her Master of Science in Mathematics in 2006. This same year, she married her husband Eli and now share three beautiful kids, Emily, Azael and Gael. That same year, she also started working as a faculty member in the Mathematics Department of South Texas College. As a faculty member, she has had the opportunity to work as director for THECB Summer Bridge Program in 2007 and 2009, CCRA Grant Co-Director in 2009, Assistant Chair from 2015 to 2018, join the STC ASCENDER team in 2018 and currently as director for THECB OER Course Development and Implementation Grant that was recently awarded to STC.
