SAC STUDENTS PRESENT PROJECTS
By Intern Sara Lovell
SAC Professor Bunch’s EDUC 1300 Ascender students received an assignment to create a Mission Statement that reflected their past, present, and future. Students were told they could be as creative as their imagination allowed them to be. There were art pieces, from sculptures to paintings, and scrapbooks submitted. Some students also used media to create videos. Every story was as unique as the person who lived it.
Through the Ascender program’s emphasis on familia to grow closer to one another, the Mission Statement assignment allowed students to be vulnerable, honest, and voice their intentions for a changed future for themselves and those around them. Unity, respect, and community filled the room as the students completed cards with feedback for one another with comments such as “you are strong; don’t give up.” There were tears, laughter, and the power to continue to push through barriers to reach educational goals was stronger for students, knowing they are not alone in this journey to higher education.
