Strategies for Student Success in Learning Frameworks Courses

In the November 2018 Teaching and Learning for Student Success webinar, Palo Alto College professor and certified master teacher, Diane Lerma, showcases some of the successful teaching strategies she uses in her course, EDUC 1300, Learning Frameworks. Lerma begins by showcasing her use of one-on-one student conferences in the third week of the semester to demonstrate caring and to find out more about each student’s individual needs. She also discusses the importance of validating students and their validation of each other. When, for example, students read their writing aloud in familias, each author receives a round of applause as a means of validating the time and effort they put into the writing. Finally, Lerma showcases some technological tools, such as Kahoot, that help to support the other validating strategies and give students an opportunity to work together and use technology for learning.
