PEER MENTOR ALVAREZ PUBLISHES IN MAGAZINE

CTN Peer Mentor, Stephanie Alvarez, has published an essay in El jardin de los poetas titled “Language, Memory, and Identity in Contemporary Border Chicana Poetry and Visual Art of the Rio Grande-Bravo Valley.”  The essay discusses ways in which the poets Emmy Pérez, Noemi Martínez, Amalia Ortiz, Lauren Espinoza and Erika Garza-Johnson, as well as visual artist Celeste De Luna, address the border and its historical and contemporary effects in the region. Specifically, it examines how these artists negotiate in language and memory within their work to demonstrate how Chicanas have always resisted the forces of assimilation and continue to confront and surpass the colonial legacy of silence and, instead, adopt multiple voices and identities as Chicanas. The Garden of Poets is a digital academic magazine that brings together original articles and unpublished articles of Latin American poetry theory and criticism.
