CTN Attends Celebración and ALASS
As a finalist for the Examples of Excelencia award, Catch the Next CEO, Maria Chavez, members of the CTN staff, and CTN college representatives attended Celebración de Excelencia in Washington, DC on October 11. Catch the Next was named a national finalist for the award, in the community-based organization category, for the second consecutive year. Nationally, Catch the Next was selected after a review of 139 nominations from 27 states, DC and Puerto Rico. This award recognizes programs that use evidence-based practices to improve educational achievement for Latino students in higher education.
The group also attended the Accelerating Latino Students Success (ALASS) Institute the following day where they were welcomed by William Serrata, President of El Paso Community College and were given an overview of the day by Sarita Brown, President of Excelencia in Education.
Participants then had the opportunity to attend various morning sessions such as “Faculty-Driven Efforts That Serve Latino Students” and “Lessons Learned from Accelerating Latino College Completion.” Speakers for the Leadership Luncheon, which was titled “The Ongoing Legacy of Latinos as Education Advocates,” were Enrique Aleman, Department Chair from UTSA, and Tomas Saenz, President of MALDEF. Three sessions were offered in the afternoon including “Latino Student Success and the Workforce.”
